Narrative review reveals teaching techniques for point-of-care ultrasonography in medical residency, indicating preference for in-person and hybrid methods.
Aim: To carry out a narrative review of the literature on the best teaching techniques in POCUS for medical residents from different areas of practice. Material and Methods: We searched MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online) platform PubMed (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/) by restricting the search engine to the following criteria: last 10 years, MEDLINE platform PubMed, full articles, primary studies, educational intervention, in English, free access and using the keywords “POCUS” AND “teaching” AND “medical residency”. Results: Among the articles analyzed in this review, 17 adopted in-person training, 11 described a hybrid approach and only one chose fully online teaching. This distribution of teaching methods suggests a notable preference for face-to-face or hybrid methods. It is important to highlight that all studies, regardless of the method chosen, incorporated previous theoretical classes. Conclusions: Theoretical lessons (didactic lectures) before hands-on sessions is the highlight of POCUS education.
