Analysis reveals teaching and learning methods vary in IB DP mathematics and revised curriculum, suggesting integration of a big idea and assessment criteria.
This study compares and analyzes the IB DP mathematics curriculum, ‘Mathematics: analysis and approaches’ and ‘Mathematics: application and interpretation,’ with the 2022 revised mathematics curriculum. We analyzed the learning content and teaching and learning methods presented in each curriculum and interviewed a teacher with experiences in teaching mathematics using both the IB DP and the Korean curriculum. The findings are as follows. First, regarding the learning content, in the higher level course of ‘Mathematics: application and interpretation’, some advanced content beyond the scope of the Korean curriculum were presented. Additionally, several contents in this course overlapped with the ‘Advanced mathematics’ of the Korean curriculum. Second, regarding the teaching and learning methods, while the IB DP's teaching and learning methods were also presented in the 2022 revised mathematics curriculum, they were more specifically outlined in the IB DP guide. Third, according to the interview with a teacher, when implementing the IB DP, the scope and depth of the learning content were adjusted depending on the students' abilities. Furthermore, since IB DP provides a concrete guidance on the teaching and learning methods, the teacher found it easier to implement various teaching and learning methods with IB DP. Based on these results, this study suggests the presentation of a big idea that can encompass learning content, guidance on its meaning and application, and the connection between teaching and leaning methods and assessment, as well as the presentation of assessment criteria.
