Analysis reveals declining Tatar speakers in Finland, highlighting the need for better archival resources.
The Tatar language is a historical minority language in Finland. The numbers of Tatar speakers appear to be decreasing. Continued documentation of the Tatar linguistic and cultural heritage is urgent and essential for the preservation and potential revitalization of the language. An overview of the use and maintenance of Tatar in Finland is presented, with discussion of the availability of audio and audiovisual resources in Finnish archives. Hitherto neglected archival materials contribute to a more complete picture of the Tatar language and diaspora. Greater use of such materials, better documentation of available resources, and increased cooperation between scholars, archivists, and members of the minority community are needed.
