Review details clinical recommendations for managing MASLD in type 2 diabetes patients, highlighting liver fibrosis assessment.
Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a newly proposed diagnostic term that replaces the previous nomenclature of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. This terminology has been endorsed by major international societies, including the Korean Diabetes Association (KDA). MASLD commonly coexists with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) and serves as an important risk factor for adverse outcomes in this population. Early identification of MASLD in patients with T2D is essential and should be followed by assessment of liver fibrosis as an important prognostic factor. Treatment strategies should be established with a focus on improving metabolic dysfunction. This review summarizes the key updates and clinical recommendations presented in the “Management of Metabolic Dysfunction-associated Steatotic Liver Disease” section of the 9th edition of the 2025 Clinical Practice Guidelines for Diabetes published by the KDA.
