Field study assesses insect attractant potency of plant extracts on Nilaparvata lugens and other pests, suggesting practical applications.
The brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (family Delphacidae), rice green leafhopper, Nephotettix virescens, and zigzag leafhopper, Recilia dorsalis (family Cicadellidae) were determined to be the highest percentage frequency of occurrence in each bottle trap containing each lure. The examined insect species in the rice field had increased the number of predictions toward the end of the study. Hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester (C17H34O2) was found to be a common compound at this time for all plant extracts, and it could be further developed and used as an attractant for insect pests of rice paddy.
