This article provides a brief overview of the development of traditional architecture, locally available resources and building techniques, and the course of research. It then highlights the challenges and threats to which it has been exposed in recent times from the perspective of heritage preservation: above all, the lack of original materials and the lack of knowledge about their use. In addition, the fact that they have recently been regarded in the context of mass tourism as attractive speculative investments on the real estate market is causing the loss of historic buildings on a huge scale.
