Narrative literature review explores challenges of autistic children and caregivers in South Africa, highlighting the need for responsive advocacy.
Purpose: Understanding neurodiversity within a South African context is key to providing contextually responsive advocacy for autistic children and their caregivers. By examining South African articles and studies, the research will explore the cultural, social, and economic contexts that influence the understanding and acceptance of neurodiversity. The study aims to explore the unique challenges faced by autistic children and their caregivers in South Africa, advocating for a more inclusive and supportive environment. The study identifies key challenges faced by autistic children and their caregivers, including aspects around stigmatization, access to services, and educational support. Method: A narrative literature review was conducted. A search for articles reporting on autism in the South African context was undertaken. Forty-one articles were selected, and data were analyzed using content analysis. Results: We posit that effective advocacy requires a comprehensive understanding of these contextual influences and that contextually responsive approaches are more successful in improving autism intervention outcomes. Conclusion: This study allows us to examine the representation of autistic individuals in research, practice, and policy, ensuring their unique experiences are fully addressed and advocating for more inclusive, context-specific strategies.
