This analysis reveals the complexity of peace activism in contexts of war and violence, suggesting a new understanding of pacifism.
This paper explores different ways in which the nexus between peace, utopia and failure can be understood, drawing on examples of feminist peace activism. The paper addresses ways of thinking about pacifist political action in contexts in which peace is defined as the absence or alternate of war/violence and in contexts which deny a binary distinction between peace and war/violence. It argues that if we are to recognise peace in the present, then we need to re-think our understandings of peace, pacifism and failure beyond the idea of a binary between war/ violence and peace.
