Discussion

Analysis of carbon emissions and economic growth trends in urban agglomerations, indicating urgent action is needed.

Carbon emissions and GDP are rising in all urban agglomerations, but some exhibit green growth patterns.
Weak decoupling is widespread in the Yellow River Basin, with some areas regressing to negative decoupling.
A core-periphery structure exists, with eastern regions stronger than the west, marked by key urban agglomerations.
Per capita GDP and technology promote decoupling, while energy intensity and population pressure hinder progress.

Zhang et al. (2025) studied this question.
