Experimental study evaluates durability of self compacting geopolymer concrete under acid exposure, suggesting its viability over ordinary cement alternatives.
Geopolymer concrete is a concrete without cement. Development of geopolymer concrete with industrial waste such as GGBS, fly ash etc., significantly reduces land fill and ground polluted problems. This type of concrete also the carbon footprints. In the present study Self Compacting Geopolymer Concrete (SCGGC) is developed using fly ash instead of cement, SP 120, Sodium Silicate (Na2Sio3) and Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) besides regular ingredients of concrete. This experimental study evaluates the durability of Self Compacting Geopolymer Concrete (SCGPC) is exposed to hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) solutions compared to Ordinary Portland Cement Concrete (OPC). Fifty four concrete cubes (27 OPC and 27SCGPC) are cast followed by 28 days curing and subjected to acid exposure for 3, 7, 28 and 56 days. Results reveled that SCGPC retained approximately 77.5%–86.5% of its strength when compared to OPC. This indicates good durability performance and suitability of SCGPC for aggressive environmental conditions.
