Analysis reveals challenges and benefits of ICT in library services in Nigeria, suggesting necessary investments.
This paper explores the application of information and communication technology (ICT) in libraries and information centres in Nigeria, highlighting its transformative role in enhancing library services, improving access to information, and promoting national development. Libraries, as critical institutions in today’s knowledge economy, rely increasingly on ICT to manage operations such as cataloguing, circulation, reference services, acquisition, and current awareness services. ICT enables the provision of efficient, user-centered, and digitally accessible services that support learning, research, and global knowledge exchange. Despite these advancements, Nigerian libraries face numerous challenges including inadequate funding, poor ICT infrastructure, low digital literacy among librarians, lack of policy frameworks, and unstable power supply. These obstacles limit the full integration and utilization of ICT in library operations. The paper concludes that for Nigerian libraries to remain relevant and competitive globally, there must be strategic investment in ICT tools, capacity building, policy formulation, infrastructure development, and stable electricity. These measures will position libraries as dynamic, digitally empowered institutions supporting sustainable education and national development.
