Observational analysis highlights the importance of nutritional support in neonatal foals, indicating improved prognosis and reduced malnutrition risks.
Nutritional support is an essential part of management of the sick neonate. Adequate energy and nutrients are required for metabolism, immune function and growth. Providing optimal nutritional care early in hospitalisation leads to fewer complications and improved overall outcomes. Appropriate nutritional support is important in reducing the risk of malnutrition, facilitating recovery and improving overall prognosis. Important considerations when feeding critically ill neonates include the type of disease, maturity of the foal, metabolic status, glycaemia, gastrointestinal function, route and type of diet. While current research offers valuable insight into many of these aspects, further studies are needed for optimal strategies to be defined.
