Experimental investigation reveals helical milling improves surface roughness and tolerances in AISI 4140 steel, suggesting its viability over drilling.
The two elements considered in the determination of the manufacturing viability of a product include the quality of the surface and the feature tolerances of that product. The core aim of this research work is to perform an experimental investigation to determine the hole accuracy on the AISI 4140 alloy steel with an innovative helical milling process, which is more commonly referred to as "hole production through a helical path milling. In this work, Taguchi's experimental design method is implemented to study the influence of feed rate, cutting speed and axial depth of cut on the surface roughness of the hole as well as geometrical and dimensional tolerances. The goal is to demonstrate that helical milling may serve as a viable substitute for traditional drilling.
