Analysis reveals significant challenges in horse breeding in Ukraine, highlighting biodiversity conservation needs.
The research was based on the results of long-term studies of the horse breeding industry in Ukraine and information from official sources. The work utilized analytical and generalized abstraction methods. The article analyzes the current state of horse breeding in Ukraine, noting a significant decline in the horse population after 1990 and a shift to private farms, which led to uncontrolled breeding and the threat of genetic pool loss. It highlights the activities of the M.V. Zubets Institute of Animal Breeding and Genetics of NAAS, which implements programs for the restoration of the Ukrainian Polissia horse breed and the creation of a new sport horse breed group. Despite significant achievements, Ukrainian horse breeding faces challenges such as the fragmented ownership structure and the need to achieve a minimum population size for international recognition of breeds. The Institute is a central institution that combines traditional breeding methods with advanced technologies, collaborating with private farms and public organizations. The prospects for development are related to the further integration of genetic technologies and the strengthening of state support
