The article shows the significance of sustainable development principles in rural areas, highlighting challenges and innovative approaches.
The article analyzes the evolution of the concept of sustainable development as a response to growing environmental, economic, and social challenges of the modern era. Key stages in the formation of the concept are examined – from theoretical foundations in the works of classical economists to international initiatives such as the WCED report Our Common Future, Agenda 21, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the Paris Climate Agreement. Particular attention is paid to the transformation of rural areas as strategically important zones of food and environmental security. It is shown that the implementation of sustainable development principles in rural areas requires the integration of environmental, economic, and social dimensions, as well as the adoption of innovative approaches, including sustainable food systems and digital transformation. The article emphasizes that successful transformation is impossible without overcoming institutional, technological, and financial barriers. It demonstrates a shift from ecological determinism to a comprehensive, systems-oriented model of sustainable development, in which rural areas become a central focus of strategic governance.
