Case report reveals a need for emergency surgical intervention due to IUCD migration complications.
The increasing use of intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCD) over recent decades has led to more detection of rare complications, including bizarre migrations of IUCD, some requiring immediate surgical help. A young G3P2L2 female with unwanted pregnancy due to contraception failure, with 9 weeks of amenorrhoea. Ultrasound showed an 8-week singleton intrauterine pregnancy with an exteriorised IUCD abutting the anterior uterine wall with sigmoid adhesions and omental wrapping. The patient had a medical termination and exploratory laparotomy. During surgery, the IUCD was observed to be abutting the sigmoid colon with dense adhesions. The IUCD was removed, the defect repaired, and a modified Pomeroy tubectomy was performed. IUCDS are popular due to ease of use and reversibility, but can cause serious complications requiring major surgery.
