This article reveals the importance of humanities studies in democratic education, highlighting its role in promoting empathy and critical thinking.
This article deals with the role of Humanitarian Studies in relation to the future of democracy in a globalized and technocratically structured society,in which Positive Studies are funded for profit at the expense of Classical Studies, which are increasingly marginalized.Firstly,this article in particular of historical retrospective refers to humanitarian education as described by Plato and Aristotle.Then,it describes in general terms the model of education today.Through comparison,the shortcomings of the present educational system are highlighted -such as cultivating of empathy,of imagination,playfulness and experiential learning,engagement with Art,critical control, reflection etc- without which the schools and universities would be transformed into spaces of thinking democratic citizens.If these shortcomings are overturned then there will be workable proposals for a healthy education and social democracy.
