Qualitative analysis shows waqf funding strengthens community-based tourism in Terengganu, suggesting collaboration with Islamic finance.
Waqf is a funding mechanism, either in the form of assets or money. Waqf is permanent in nature, with benefits derived from its funds or assets are distributed according to the intentions of the waqif (donor). The broad scope of waqf allows it to be applied in various fields, including Community-Based Tourism. One of the challenges faced by this industry is financial constraint. Therefore, this article analyses the potential of waqf funding in strengthening Community-Based Tourism. This research is conducted using a qualitative approach, with data obtained through document studies and interviews with relevant authorities. It has been found that several strategies can be employed to enhance Community-Based Tourism. These include waqf administrators developing existing waqf assets for Community-Based Tourism, funding from related ministries, industry players, and the public, as well as collaborative investments with Islamic banking institutions. To achieve these goals, cooperation must be established among waqf administrators, relevant ministries, and Islamic financial institutions.
