Systematic review examines CNG viability for automobiles in Nigeria, suggesting policy improvement is needed.
Countries are looking into alternative fuel sources as a result of the growing demand for affordable and sustainable energy options worldwide. Compared to other conventional fossil fuels, compressed natural gas (CNG) provides a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly energy source. Nigeria has a large potential market for CNG adoption because of its rich natural gas reserves. Relevant literature from 2010 to 2024 was analyzed using a systematic review methodology. Databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Government reports were searched using keywords like "CNG in Nigeria", "natural gas adoption", "alternative fuels Nigeria", "automotive fuel" and "energy transition Nigeria." The selection of studies was focused on their applicability to Nigeria's energy policies, infrastructure, socioeconomic impact, and viability of CNG. By examining its infrastructure, economic viability, policy framework, resource availability, and constraints, this analysis assesses the viability of CNG adoption for automobiles in Nigeria. Nigeria has the resources and capacity to use CNG for automobiles, according to findings from this research, but its widespread adoption is hampered by legislative loopholes, infrastructure deficiencies, and low public awareness. Hence, to promote the use of CNG for automobiles in Nigeria, the government must create a carbon credit system, a robust natural gas transmission and distribution network, expand public knowledge and the accessibility of CNG refueling stations.
