This research reveals the economic impact of NLNG on Nigeria, highlighting challenges and suggesting solutions for the gas industry’s growth.
The Natural gas sector plays a key position in the energy industry today, but the sector remained untapped for decades. On May 17, 1989, the Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas (NLNG) was incorporated and since then it has grown exponentially from a small company to the largest LNG plant in Africa. Since 2010, it has contributed to about 1% of Nigeria's GDP thereby contributing immensely to the Nigerian economy. NLNG's goal is to harness Nigeria's vast natural gas resources, producing liquefied natural gas (LNG) and natural gas liquefied (NGL) for global export and ensuring energy sustainability and economic growth. The study aims to explore the impact of the NLNG on Nigeria's economy by performing some econometric analysis on the performance of the sector for the past 35 years, showing its positive impact on all sectors of the economy and even Africa as a whole. This research delves into highlighting some of the challenges faced by the NLNG, providing suggestions and insights on various areas of development for this sector. It would feature some of the NLNG's plans. This paper helps with great insights into understanding NLNG's role in the economic development of Nigeria and African economies. This paper aim at maximizing African gas reserve resources and ensuring African continues to go up in the rank of leading gas industries globally by comparing the performance of NLNG with other top LNG projects in Africa, providing reliable information that acts as a catalyst for growth. This research also proffers sustainable solutions to some of the issues faced by the NLNG and the Nigerian economy at large, serving as a guide for effective policymaking, thereby innovating a green and sustainable African gas industry.
