Hierarchical linear modeling reveals that ethical leadership mediates outcomes of abusive supervision, indicating its importance in workplace dynamics.
In this study, the authors examine the impact of perceptions of ethical leadership as a mediator of the relationships between abusive supervision and the work-related outcomes of task performance and task-focused organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) after one year. Using hierarchical linear modeling analyses and a time-lagged sample of 121 matched pairs suggested that abusive supervision had a direct effect on perceptions of ethical leadership one year after the abuse occurred. Moreover, results showed that perceptions of ethical leadership fully mediated the relations between abusive supervision and task-focused OCB rated by leaders after one year, but not task performance.
