Analysis reveals the settlement system's industrial potential in Donbas, highlighting urbanism and ecological challenges.
In these research materials, a separate economic region of Ukraine, namely Donbas, is considered from the standpoint of its development as an industrial potential, the first proposals for the formation of a settlement system built on the ideas of urbanism and deurbanism, the ecological state and modern problems of military aggression. The main stages of the extremely complex history of development, which were accompanied by advanced ideas in the field of urban planning and architecture, are outlined. Donbas is a region in which a regional approach to the formation of a settlement system was proposed for the first time, which took into account industry, engineering and transport networks, and most importantly, a network of settlements aimed at providing housing conditions for the population. A network that consisted of a system of large new cities, industrial settlements and villages to serve agricultural activities. Much attention is paid to environmental problems that have grown with the development of industry and focused attention on the search for reducing environmental risks. Special attention is paid to the proposals of young architects who applied intellectual efforts to transform the negative consequences of production into modern urban functional structures and reduce the burden on nature. The work highlights several main characteristic stages from the point of view of urban planning: - it beginning of the 20th century and the conceptual proposal of the first regional planning ideas; - the middle of the 20th century – the emergence of the idea of forming economic agglomerations and the system of populated cities; The end of the 20th century - the search for the idea of industrial associations according to the technological process, sustainable development and ecological improvement of the region. Attention is focused on the search for a strategy for the current problem of restoration, reconstruction – social, industrial, natural, demographic, etc.
