By ratifying the European Landscape Convention, Serbia committed to landscape planning and management based on contemporary, holistic principles. This approach, aligned with Ian McHarg’s concept of “design with nature,” is a manifest of the landscape architecture academy. The Atlas of Landscape Character Types of Belgrade offers strategic guidelines for landscape development. The authors propose amendments to the Law on Planning and Construction to include ecological and design-based rules for landscape planning. The reproducible, modular landscape character assessment method is applicable in spatial planning and environmental impact assessments. The question “What kind of city do we want?” highlights the need for a transdisciplinary approach to spatial and urban planning that emphasize the landscape as a public good, essential for the development of green infrastructure. This paper presents experiences in applying the method landscape character assessment at the regional level (Belgrade) and local level (Surčin).
