Experimental analysis reveals a maximum power coefficient of 0.15 in a horizontal-axis wind turbine, suggesting enhanced efficiency under low wind conditions.
This paper presents the results of an experimental study on a horizontal-axis wind turbine (HAWT) optimized for operation under low wind speed conditions. Five rotors with different numbers of blades were examined at various blade pitch angles. The experimental results show that the turbine achieves a maximum power coefficient of 0.15 at a wind speed of 3 m/s -, a range in which most horizontal-axis wind turbines are unable to self-start. A comparative analysis is provided against the efficiency of horizontal wind turbines studied over the past decade. The optimized turbine can be applied in small hybrid solar-wind systems, which are suitable for partially covering the energy needs of small households, cabins, villas, etc. The Experiments were conducted on a specialized laboratory test bench at the Laboratory of Hydropower and Hydraulic Turbomachinery at the Technical University of Sofia.
