Experiment assesses nitrogen application methods and rates on yields in common beans, suggesting optimal practices.
Proper nitrogen management helps to optimize the use of chemical fertilizers, making it necessary to identify optimal rates and methods of application to obtain high yield. The aim was to evaluate the effect of application methods of nitrogen rates in top-dressing on the agronomic and qualitative characteristics of common bean. The experiment was conducted in the autumn-winter 2022 harvest, using the early cycle common bean cultivar IAC Polaco1849. A randomized block design was used, in a 2x3 + 1 factorial scheme with 4 replications. The treatments consisted of two N application methods (top-dressing and in line) and 4 top dressing rates (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg ha-1), with rate 0 being the additional treatment. Increasing rates of N of up to 100 kg ha-1 in top-dressing promoted higher yield values, mass of one hundred grains and sieve yield (RP) ≥12. The method of continuous application of N promoted an increase of 85 kg ha-1 in yield compared to top-dressing application. The application of N to common beans in line is an alternative management practice to increase legume yield by more than 3%.
