An integrated approach identifies corrosion defects in 09G2C steel pipelines, suggesting critical impacts on safety.
A comprehensive analysis of the causes of local corrosion defects on the inner surface of the 09G2C steel wastewater pipeline was carried out, which included steel metallography, precipitation analysis, and corrosion rate determination. During the metallographic study the microstructural features of steel and the presence of corrosion-active nonmetallic inclusions were determined. The pattern of location of local defects inside the pipeline was studied. The composition of deposits on the pipe, which consists of organic and inorganic compounds, was determined. The depth of the defects was used to measure the rate of local corrosion and thinning of the pipe thickness.
