The study emphasizes some conceptual issues connected with finding ways to update the perception of strategic economic activity planning nature, considering modern features of conducting economic activity at the state level. It is noted that the current systems are characterized by complexity and multidimensional nature, with a large number of interrelations between the elements. In such conditions, the process of determining long-term development guidelines in accordance with the objective laws of the external environment is of particular importance for the economy. Also have been mentioned two different strategic planning systems: within the framework of the Soviet school of planning and with an indicative approach. As indicative system is common in a market economy, during the study were also developed recommendations to launch several methodological researches in the mentioned in the article areas in order to understand the nature and character of the modern strategic planning system.
