Discussion

Analysis reveals narrowing gender gap in housework and shopping, but childcare disparities persist in families.

Gender gap in housework time decreased from a women-to-men ratio of 1.8:1 to 1.5:1 between 2003 and 2022.
Core housework saw a significant narrowing, particularly in cleaning and laundry, from a ratio of 4.2:1 to 2.5:1.
Shopping time reached gender parity, indicating a shift in domestic labor roles among men and women.
Childcare ratio remains at 2:1, suggesting persistent disparities in parenting responsibilities despite progress in other areas.

Milkie et al. (2025) studied this question.
